custom springs

Depending on the type of springs you need, you will have several options for end types. Different ends will fulfill different needs for your product or application. Just remember, almost anything can be customized! Read on to learn more about spring and wire form end types.

Extension Spring End Options

Since extension springs start compressed and are pulled apart by a force, the most common end types are hooks and loops. This makes them ideal for parts of applications where two components need to be held together (or close together).

The loop ends of extension springs are usually closed, and simple modifications can be made to make them into hooked ends when required. End styles include:

  • Crossover: the wire will cross over the spring at the end
  • Machine: the wire will naturally come out of the loop without crossing over
  • Side: the end of the wire sits on the side of the spring (on the same plane as the body)
  • Double loop: two loops are formed at the end of the spring

Compression Spring End Options

The two main types of ends for compression springs are open and closed. In open end springs, the final coils have very little distance between them and are often touching. The spring will essentially sit flat if placed on a flat surface. These are more common than open end springs.

In open end springs, a small bit of space is left between the final two coils. These types of springs need support from a road (or something similar). In both open and closed end compression springs, the ends of the wire can be ground down to create a flat surface that enhances stability.

Torsion Spring End Options

In most cases, although there are exceptions, torsion springs tend to have one type of end: a straight length of wire (or leg). This is because of the primary function of a torsion spring, to deflect when rotary force is applied to it. Custom torsion springs can be made that have bends, so don’t hesitate to ask for something custom when you place your order.
