medical equipment

Medical device manufacturers frequently reach out to our company for springs they need for their products and applications. It just one of the many industries that we serve. There are a few types of commonly used mechanical springs in these types of medical products.

Constant Force Springs

Springs with a constant force do not follow Hooke’s law of elasticity. These springs — instead of having an increase in length that is directly proportional to the force applied to them — have a smooth range of motion and a constant load when lengthening. The force they exerts over their range of motion is a constant.

Constant force springs are generally made from a ribbon of rolled steel that is coiled when relaxed. This makes these springs perfect for medical applications and devices that require precise, steady movements.

These springs also offer:

  • A high force output that only requires a small amount of space
  • A long linear reach that extends with minimal force buildup
  • A storage of power that is indefinite when in an extended position

Spiral Torsion Springs

While torsion springs generally lengthen using rotational force, spiral torsion springs exert their rotational torque through a rotation that is  360° or less.

Spiral torsion springs are made using steel that is flattened and are easily identifiable because their coils do not naturally touch. The inner and outer ends are bent, allowing for these springs to be attached to objects. They are commonly found in medical devices that need to be able to rotate in either direction and then return to center, making them perfect for a devices like X-ray head units.

Stainless Steel: The Preferred Material

One of the commonalities you will find among springs for medical devices is they are all generally made using stainless steel. Stainless steel springs are the most common springs used in medical products because of their durability and resistance to corrosion. Steel is also cost-effective when compared to other materials and, most importantly, it can be easily cleaned in order to limit the spread of bacteria and other infections.
