Whether working with metals, plastics or precision wire products, manufacturing employees were once the core of the American workforce. Although the times have changed, and the workforce has significantly shifted towards various services industries, manufacturing has proven to be alive and well in the U.S.

Back from the Brink

Over the years, the U.S. has lost millions of manufacturing jobs to other countries (2.4 million to China from 2001 to 2013), due to recessions and other economic factors, leaving industry professional to wonder if manufacturing jobs will ever return to America.

It seems that at least some jobs have been coming back to the U.S.

In total, manufacturing jobs in the U.S. grew by 13,000 in 2015. It may seem like a small number, but it’s a turnaround from the consistent loses that the industry was seeing in the years before.

Top Companies Bringing Jobs Back

Who are the top companies that are bringing jobs back to the U.S.? Here’s a short breakdown of the numbers:

  • Walmart: the retail giant and world’s largest company reshored 4,838 manufacturing jobs in 2015, mostly from China. This is thanks to its “Made in the USA” program that plans to bring more American-made products to its shelves.
  • Ford: one of the U.S.’s largest car companies, Ford brought back 3,200 jobs last year. Ohio benefitted from this boom more than any other U.S. state thanks to a new production plant in Avon Lake (the plant was moved from Mexico).
  • Boeing: focusing on parts manufacturing for its planes, Boeing brought 2,700 U.S. jobs home in 2015. They company has vowed to bring even more back by 2017.
