spring dimensions

We’ve learned many things about the spring design process over the past century we have been in business. One of those is that the process, whether you are talking about torsion, extension or compression spring design, requires a great bit of thought, more than we can quickly cover in as short a period of time as a simple post on our website.

Nevertheless, we have set out to give our customers (whether current or future) a glimpse into what goes into our spring design process. Our last post covered how to choose a material that is right for your spring based on its environment and expected life cycle. But that is only the beginning of the spring design process. Today, we will continue to provide a glimpse into our thought process and how we design and build springs for customers like you.

Understanding Your Application

Once you have given ample thought to the environment in which your springs are placed, it’s time to focus on your product or application. More specifically, where will your spring be used within this application.

In order to achieve optimal spring performance, our engineering team needs to know all about your application and how the spring fits into its operation. This will help us determine the proper wire size, diameter, total coils and many other dimensional factors. This all accounts for the amount of deflection is necessary for your application’s spring.

From there, we will determine the solid height of your spring and the length of the spring when relaxed. This allows us to determine the distance that your spring can travel when a force is applied to it as well as its optimum range of performance.

That’s Not All

Depending on the type of spring you need, there are many other factors that need to be taken into considerations, including:

  • Spring wind direction (torsion springs)
  • End configurations (torsion and extension springs)
  • Loop position (extension springs)
  • Maximum solid (compressions springs)
  • Hook opening (extension springs)
  • Initial tension (extension springs)
