torsion springs

A torsion spring is rather unique not only because of its design, but in the different way it functions, as well. Standard compression and extension springs operate by having a load applied them, causing them to compress or extend, respectively, but a torsion spring bends based on the rotary force (torque) that is applied to it. This makes torsion springs unlike any other mechanical springs in existence.

About Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are still helical springs, but they are apply and store rotary force. The ends of the springs are generally attached to some other part of an application, which means that the ends will rotate around the center of the spring before moving back to their original position. Although they are called “torsion” springs, they are actually subjected to bending stress rather than torsional stress.

Generally, torsion springs are close wound, but they can have a pitch that helps reduce the friction that occurs between the coils. They can also be designed to operate clockwise or counterclockwise, which will inevitably determine the direction of the wind.

Designing a Torsion Spring

There are many factors to take into account when designing a torsion spring:

  • The angular deflection: the angle of rotation that is measured from the spring’s free position to the final position.
  • Maximum deflection: how far the spring can rotate before becoming damaged.
  • Leg length: the length of the wire (known as the leg) measured from the axis of the spring to the wire’s end.
  • End type: the shape of the wire at the end of each leg (hook, curved, straight, etc.).
  • Direction of wind: clockwise or counterclockwise.
  • Number of coils ( active coils): how many coils the spring needs. Keep in mind that all coils on torsion springs are active.
