Testing Springs for Maximum Effectiveness

As the design of custom springs evolves, so too must the processes and techniques that go into testing them. Whether testers are using load and free length testing on compression springs or any other process, the methodology must be updated to keep up with new spring designs.
How Springs Are Tested
The testing method applied depends on the spring and its desired application. In general, spring performance testing involves load/rate testing — a methodology that measures the spring’s load and length at 20 and 80 percent, respectively, of the either the spring’s rated load or length. The measuring system that test load/rate should be accurate to at least +/- 0.5% of full scale. If being used to determine length at a variety of load limits, measurements need to be compensated for the deflection of the load application and measurement system along with the spring when loads are applied.
Testers also use the load/rate testing on extension springs, with the difference being that the measurements are taken while the spring is in extension, rather than when compressed. Extension springs also have initial tension since they are in a compressed state at rest. The load that is applied to extension springs separates the active coils.
Innovation in Spring Testing
Newer spring testing innovations are used in high-volume testing environments and specially designed to take precise measurements that are repeatable. Because these systems use new measurement software, operators can easily perform testing faster but with the same reliable results. The sophisticated spring measurements taken by testers ensure that each custom spring fits the desired application and measurements provided by spring customers.
