Getting the next generation exciting about manufacturing can be difficult. There has been a stigma attached to the industry that paints it as a lower level job. We all know this is not the case (there’s no doubt about it, creating an intricate spring design requires thought, skill and patience).

But how do we get future generations thinking about their role in this industry?

Talk Up the Technology

While it may be a stereotype that all younger people love technology, the truth is that this generation has practically grown up with a smartphone or tablet in their hands. Most don’t know just how much technology has changed the manufacturing industry, though.

Computers and automated systems are now used by precision spring manufacturers and just about every other manufacturer to some degree. All of these highly technical pieces of equipment need operators who intuitively understand the ins and outs of the equipment.

The Job Skill Level is High

All of these high tech devices need programmers and quality assurance experts to make certain they’re doing their task, so more and more of the work in manufacturing isn’t doing things by hand, but by programming computers to do them for you.

These devices may make much more precise and accurate cuts or welds, but they also can’t think independently. Someone has to be there controlling them and making sure they do what they’re supposed to be doing.

Teach Them When They’re Young

Very few schools offer shop class anymore, which could explain why fewer young people are as interested in manufacturing or any of the other trades today. While it may not be possible to get shop classes back in school, it is possible to offer to do equipment demonstrations at schools, especially during career days or for seniors who are uncertain about their future. Plus you can invite the schools to your plant for a tour. You may even be able to volunteer to create an after-school shop class as an extracurricular activity.

Building the Future

At the Yost Superior Co., we understand the importance of getting children involved in the STEM fields. One day, our expert team will retire, and the future generations will take over creating amazing spring designs. In the meantime, contact our team today to get started on your spring order.
